Main sewer cleaning in Worcester — laterals, roots, and backups

Every fixture slow at once, sewage at the lowest drain, or a lateral that has been patched more times than anyone remembers. Roto-Rooter clears main sewer lines in older Worcester houses. Call or text (508) 335-3306. HIC#208076.

Main-line work we do and what usually failed

Clay joints, roots, and a cleanout nobody has opened in a decade. A toilet clog is $200. This page is the line that serves the whole house.

Clay laterals

  • Bell-and-spigot joints offset
  • Roots at every hub
  • Broken tile in the yard
  • Patches from three decades of cables

Roots

  • Fine hair roots in the joints
  • A taproot that the cable skipped
  • Recut after the last clearing
  • Jetting when the cutter is not enough

Cleanouts

  • Buried or painted shut
  • Interior stack cleanout
  • Yard cleanout at the property line
  • No cleanout — work from a fixture

Backups

  • All fixtures slow together
  • Lowest drain overflowing first
  • City main vs. your lateral
  • Need a camera before you dig

Find the cleanout, then see how far the stop sits

If every fixture is involved, we do not start at the kitchen trap. We look for a cleanout — basement, exterior, or the stack — and cable from there. Worcester laterals are often clay from the foundation to the city tap. Roots at the hubs are normal. A cable will cut them; it will not round a collapsed tile back into a pipe.

When the cable skips, or the same backup returns, a camera is the next honest step, not a longer snake. Heavy grease and scale that a cutter will not move is hydro jetting. Repairing the pipe itself may be trenchless or excavation. Labor is quoted on site; you are not buying a package you cannot see.

Labor and materials

Main sewer clearing is quoted after we see access and how far the stop sits. A toilet fixture clog is still $200 on the toilet drains page — that number does not cover the lateral. Camera and jetting are separate when we need them. If the line is broken, excavation is a different conversation before anyone opens the yard.

Our sewer line services include

  • Sewer line cleaning: Prevent clogs and backups with routine cleanings.
  • Video camera inspections: See exactly what’s causing your sewer line problems with our in-pipe inspections.
  • Sewer line repair: We use conventional excavation and trenchless methods to repair damaged sewer lines with minimal disruption.
  • Sewer line replacement: When repairs aren’t feasible, we replace your sewer line with durable, high-quality materials.

Know it is the main before you plunge every bowl

  • More than one fixture slow at once is the main until proven otherwise.
  • The lowest drain — basement floor, tub, or a first-floor toilet — overflows first. That is a clue, not a separate clog.
  • Wipes and grease belong in the trash. Clay hubs catch both.
  • If we already cleared this line this year, say so. Repeating the same cable without a camera is how you pay twice for a break.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know it is the main, not the toilet?

Flush another fixture. If the tub gurgles or the basement drain rises, it is the line. One toilet that will not go down, and everything else is fine, is often still a fixture clog.

Is the backup the city’s problem?

Sometimes. Your lateral runs to the tap. A city main surcharge can push sewage back. We will tell you if the stop is on your side or if you need the city.

Will you dig up the yard?

Not on a first cable. We camera when the line will not stay open. Digging is quoted after we know where the break is — not by guessing from the porch.

Sewage is already on the floor.

Stop using water. Call. Clearing the line is this page. Standing water is water damage. We will say which job comes first.

Do you replace drain pipe too?

Yes when the pipe is the failure. That write-up lives on pipes. Clearing a clog and replacing a lateral are different invoices unless we actually do both.
